Canty, Thomas

(1952- ) US illustrator known for his pale, delicate style, for the Art Nouveau-inspired, ethereal women he often paints, and for his use of stylized costume details. His approach has been famously described by Terri Windling as "New Romanticism", said to contrast with the "Heroic" style associated with artists like Frank Frazetta. Canty's fame is out of proportion to the amount of work (mostly book covers) he has published, though he works also under pseudonyms. While he has often been nominated for the Hugo and regularly scores highly in the Locus poll, his work is almost exclusively Fantasy, though he has done the covers for a few sf novels like John DeChancie's Innerverse (1996) and Bruce McAllister's Dream Baby (1989), the latter cover dominated by a striking double image of a helicopter aiming searchlights over a shadowy plain. Canty also wrote a children's poem published as a book, A Monster at Christmas (1985 chap), but he oddly chose another artist, Phil Hale, to provide its illustrations. [PN/JG/GW]
