(1929-2015) US screenwriter and author who began writing work of genre interest with "All of Us Are Dying" for the Slick magazine Rogue in October 1961, and who concentrated for most of his career on fantasy and horror work, some of it assembled in All of Us Are Dying and Other Stories (coll 1999). Scripts and Stories Written for The Twilight Zone (coll 1977; vt Twilight Zone Scripts and Stories 1996) and Writing for The Twilight Zone (coll 1980) contain scripts created for The Twilight Zone (1959-1964), few of them sf. As an sf writer, Johnson contributed three stories to Gamma 1963-1965, wrote the script for the first-aired episode of the original Star Trek – "The Man Trap" (8 September 1966), introducing Doctor McCoy's line "He's dead, Jim" – and was co-author with William F Nolan (whom see for details) of the well-known Dystopia Logan's Run (1967). This novel was filmed as Logan's Run (1976) and inspired a 1977-1978 Television series (see film entry for discussion). Many of his stories, including the cancelled Twilight Zone segment "Sea Change", were adapted for the Clayton-inspired 1990s Comics title The Deepest Dimension Terror Anthology, written and edited by Jay Allen Sanford for Revolutionary Comics. Later non-genre Cinema work included the original story for the crime caper Ocean's Eleven (2001). [JC/DRL]
