(1975-    ) US author, of considerable significance for his Heroic Fantasies [for this term and for Robert Jordan see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below], coming to wide notice with his continuations of Jordan's Wheel of Time sequence and his own Mistborn sequence [neither listed below]. Of sf interest is the Young Adult Reckoners series beginning with Steelheart (2013), which is set in a Ruined Earth world in which radioactive action has created Superheroes, but unfortunately almost exclusively evil ones. Known (with what seems a knowing reflexivity) as Epics, they rule such cities as Chicago and New York. The protagonist, whose father was killed by the virtually indestructible Epic called Steelheart, seeks out the underground anti-superhero alliance of Reckoners and becomes engaged in a long and ongoing battle to defeat the tyranny.

Sanderson edited issues #41 and #42 (April and October 2001) of the Semiprozine The Leading Edge, and is one of the editorial/contributor team of the Audiozine Writing Excuses, which won the 2013 Hugo for Best Related Work. His fantasy The Emperor's Soul (2012) also won a 2013 Hugo, as Best Novella. Perfect State (2015 dos) is a Brain in a Box story whose boxed protagonist's Virtual-Reality fantasy Utopia is challenged by a boxed rival. [JC/DRL]
