US sf Wargames magazine published by Simulations Publications Inc (SPI) from issue #1 (March 1980) to #12 (January 1982) with Redmond A Simonsen as editor; thereafter by Dragon Publishing, edited by Michael Moore from #12 (January 1982) to #14 (Spring 1983) and by Kim Mohan from #15 (Fall 1983) to #17 (Spring 1984). The schedule was bimonthly to #12 and thereafter quarterly. Seventeen issues plus two Mohan-edited specials not numbered in the main sequence: #1 (Summer 1983) and #2 (copyright 1983), the latter possibly not released until 1984.
Despite the strong Games focus – a new Board Game was included in each issue – Ares contained some fiction and sf book/film reviews. Story contributors included Poul Anderson, Jayge Carr, Harry Harrison, Andrew J Offutt and Timothy Zahn. In 1984 Ares was merged into TSR's Dragon Magazine as the semi-independent "Ares Section", which made its debut in issue #84 (April 1984). [DRL]
