(? - ) US film art director and author who is of some sf interest for The Explorers Guild, Volume One: A Passage to Shambhala (2015) with Kevin Costner, Stephen Meyer and Rick Ross; a second, fuller title-page in "period" gear, providing an informative continuation of the subtitle, reads Being an Introduction to that Secret Society and an Account of Certain Travelers in their Far-Faring Search for the Sacred City Yrs 1912-1918. Baird seems to be the main contributor of words to the project; Ross supplies the graphic novel elements which by page count occupy about half the book. As its presentation hints, A Passage to Shambhala is a Steampunk-ish ripping-yarn evocation of adventure tales popular before World War One, which occupies the background here, and focuses on an expedition of soi-disant Secret Masters in search of the Lost World of Shambhala. Continuations in various media were projected but have not appeared. Baird should not be confused with the filmmaker Jon S Baird (1972- ). [JC]
