Cinescape

Entry updated 4 April 2017. Tagged: Publication.

Letter-size saddle-stapled Cinema magazine printed on glossy paper. Sendal Publications/Cinescape Media/Mania Entertainment. Editor: unknown. At least 78 issues from 1994 to 2004. Publication was generally bimonthly.

One of the more successful imitators of Starlog and its ilk, this title ran for at least a decade; coverage was almost exclusively of then-current films and Television programmes. Featured television series included Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2002), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-1999), Twin Peaks (1991-1992) and The X-Files (1993-2002) and many more. Films included Alien Resurrection (1997), Star Trek: First Contact (1996) and Timecop (1994). Cinescape was lightweight in tone and perhaps even more beholden to the studios than Starlog for most of its material. Some issues included pull-out posters of various performers. As with many print magazines, competition from the internet combined with rising production costs to bring an end to publication by the mid-2000s. There were at least two companion titles: Cinescape Insider – essentially a series of special editions of the parent magazine in perfect-bound format – and a Horror film magazine titled Wicked which ran for several years in the 1990s. Collectors should note that a publisher's error led to two consecutive editions being numbered #53. Occasional giant-sized issues in perfect-bound format also appeared, usually specials on particular films or television series. An undated give-away "ashcan" issue, now scarce, preceded #1 in 1994.
