Engelhardt, Frederick

Entry updated 14 April 2023. Tagged: Author.

(?   -    ) Author whose first published story was the serialized novella "General Swamp, C.I.C." (August-September 1939 Astounding), a routine adventure in which human colonies on Venus (see Colonization of Other Worlds) rebel against Earth. Ten further stories, not all sf, appeared in various Pulp magazines including The Argosy, Thrilling Wonder Stories and Unknown, before the author fell silent in 1941. At least one tale appeared as by Fred Engelhardt.

In Fandom Engelhardt has been wrongly identified, despite a lack of stylistic similarity, as a Pseudonym of L Ron Hubbard. However, these works do not appear in the Bridge Publications bibliography of Hubbard's work, and Hubbard confirmed that he was not Engelhardt when asked by that publisher's representative. Additionally, Stefan R Dziemianowicz has reported that Hubbard's name does not appear on the Street & Smith payslips for the Engelhardt stories published in Astounding. [DRL/PF]
