England Invaded

Entry updated 11 April 2022. Tagged: Film.

Film (1909). Warwick Trading Company. Directed and written by Leo Stormont. Story may have been based without credit on Guy du Maurier's An Englishman's Home (performed 27 January 1909; 1909 chap). Cast not given. 10 minutes. Black and white.

Like The Airship Destroyer (1909) directed by Walter R Booth earlier the same year, England Invaded is a very early sf movie and also an early visual presentation of the Future War Invasion story in which England is threatened from somewhere in the European Continent (no specific country is identified in either film). The story, which features invading armies, was staged, accompanied by live actors, songs, and recitations by its director (the first performance was 22 February 1909 Coliseum Theatre, London). [JC]
