Estonia

Entry updated 19 July 2021. Tagged: International.

A full entry for sf in the Republic of Estonia, the Northern European country absorbed into the USSR in 1940 (with a period of Nazi occupation 1941-1944) and independent since 1990/1991, must await a contributor fluent in its language and able to report from the inside on the development of the genre in that region and on untranslated works. Meanwhile, relevant authors given full entries in this encyclopedia are Friedebert Tuglas, who was active from the early twentieth century and well into the Soviet era, and Mati Unt, who began to publish in 1963 and created works of sf interest from 1990. Further authors of Estonian parentage are the Swiss-born US writer Kirsten Bakis; and Sandra Kasturi, born in Estonia though now in Canada.

The country's contributions to Cinema are significant and are usually from the long-established studio Tallinnfilm based in the capital city Tallinn; this was founded as Estonian Culture Film in 1931. The film Otel U pogibshchego alpinista (1979; vt Dead Mountaineer Hotel), made by the Estonian director Grigori Kromanov, is based on a novella by Arkady and Boris Strugatski. Animated films of interest include the Estonian/Russian Klaabu kosmoses (1981; vt Klaabu in Space) directed by Avo Paistik, and The Night of the Carrots (1998; original title Porgandite öö) directed and written by Priit Pärn (whom see for his other productions). The offbeat Videogame Disco Elysium (2019) was originally created by Estonians.

Fandom has long been established in Estonia, and national Conventions are held. [DRL]
