Fantascene

Entry updated 4 April 2017. Tagged: Publication.

Letter-size saddle-stapled Cinema Fanzine printed on middle-grade paper. Published by Dennis and Robert Skotak. Editor: Robert Skotak. Four numbered but undated issues published 1977 to 1978 on a roughly quarterly schedule.

Despite its short existence, this is regarded as one of the best 1970s fanzines to focus on Horror and sf Cinema. Excellent material was presented, relating to both vintage productions and such then-recent films as Carrie (1976) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). Classic coverage included reviews of Forbidden Planet (1956) and an in-depth study of Invaders from Mars (1953) as well as of that film's director, William Cameron Menzies. Many of the articles were contributed by the Skotak brothers; covers were film scenes from various productions. Robert Skotak has since become a professional visual effects supervisor who has worked on many Fantasy and sf films, including Aliens (1986) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). [GSt]
