Flash, The

Entry updated 10 November 2023. Tagged: TV.

US tv series (1990-1991). Pet Fly Productions/Warner Brothers Television for CBS-TV. Character created by Gardner F Fox and Harry Lampert for Flash Comics #1 (January 1940). Flash costume created by Stan Winston. Produced by Gail Morgan Hickman, Steven Long Mitchell. Directors included Bruce Bilson, Jonathan Sanger, Gus Trikonis. Writers included Danny Bilson, Howard Chaykin, Hickman, John Francis Moore. Cast includes Alex Désert (Julio Mendez), Mike Genovese (Lt Warren Garfield), Amanda Pays and John Wesley Shipp. 22 50-minute episodes. Colour.

Barry Allen (Shipp) is a police forensics scientists in Central City who is doused with a variety of chemicals when his laboratory was struck by lightning, resulting in his gaining a Superpower: the ability to move at the speed of sound. When his brother is killed by a corrupt ex-policeman he becomes the costumed Superhero The Flash, long established in Comics. Dr Christina "Tina" McGee (Pays), working at a research institute in the city, develops his costume to allow Allen to withstand the frictional heating his running creates. Though Allen mostly faces routine criminals, several challenge him with sf equipment or devices including an Android, a Clone of himself, and a Cryogenics gun. In one episode he experiences Time Travel into an alternate future. While the production was quite well done, ratings were never very high, and the series ended after one season. [GSt]
