For Monsters Only

Entry updated 4 April 2017. Tagged: Publication.

US letter-size Cinema magazine printed on newsprint-quality paper. Published by Robert C Sproul as Major Magazines Incorporated. Editor: Lorraine Newman. Ten issues, November 1965 to June 1972, plus one 1967 Annual edition. Publication schedule was nominally quarterly but in fact very erratic.

Sproul, who had previously issued the magazine Saturn, imitated Famous Monsters of Filmland with this unremarkable companion title to his successful Humour publication Cracked (1958-2007). The magazine was decidedly juvenile in tone; besides the usual articles on Horror films and performers, there were contests, games and items for readers to cut out. Films covered included Scream and Scream Again (1970) and Trog (1970). Featured performers included John Carradine, Boris Karloff and Vincent Price. Much Comics material also appeared. Artists who contributed both general artwork and comics were John Severin (1921-2012) and Bill Ward (1919-1988); credited cover artists were Severin and Gray Morrow. Collectors should note that the cover title was Cracked's For Monsters Only until #8, then simply For Monsters Only for the final two issues.

Most of the magazine's material was reprinted in the 1980s title Cracked's Monster Party (1988-1999), a publication specializing in Satire of sf/horror films and Television programmes. [GSt]
