Goodfellow, Cody

Entry updated 12 September 2022. Tagged: Author.

(1973-    ) US composer, actor, editor and author, most of whose early work has been horror, though his first publication of genre interest, the Radiant Dawn sequence beginning with Radiant Dawn (2000), intensifies Technothriller topoi – primarily a secret Weapon that could unleash Evolutionary change on humanity – with various Horror in SF routines; in the midst of this very Near Future turmoil, there are hints that deep ancient gods (see Cthulhu Mythos; H P Lovecraft) may have been aroused. Several of his singletons venture into the fantastic, the closest to sf perhaps being Spore (2010), the eponymous self-aware Hive-Mind entity seeping from beneath Los Angeles (see California) to drive humans made: the city burns.

More sf-like in its telling is Perfect Union (2009), in which a Utopian community has been constructed through human ingestion of honey from Genetically Engineered bees creates perfect workers, perfect warriors, and a Chairman ruling the nest. Unamerica (2019), set in an Underground coercive Keep half a mile below the quasi-walled American border with Mexico, where detainees, religious fanatics, Drug-obsessed manipulators, and others churn together in a portrait of the Near Future as profoundly Dystopian. And Scum of the Earth (2019) carries the gonzo surrealism of Goodfellow's default strategy into Space Opera country, with planet Earth demolished in an attempt on the part of the Intergalactic Narcotic Enforcement Force to control a drug which, when injected, addicts users to the shape and flavour of the human imagination.
