(1877-1943) UK author who also wrote as by David Goodwin, as by John Goodwin (who should be distinguished from the real John C Goodwin), and as by John Tregillis. Much of his work for the Boys' Papers appeared as single-issue tales (here treated as individual titles) in the Boys' Friend Library, either reprinted from earlier sources or original, beginning with the nonfantastic Man to Man (1908) as by David Goodwin. The Near Future Invasion sequence (see Invasion) includes Kaiser or King?: How Britain Fought for Life (1912 Boys' Friend; 1913), The Conquest of London (1912 Boys' Friend; 1913) as by John Tregillis (see London), The Flying Armada (1912-1913 Boys' Friend; 1913) as by John Tregellis and The Emperor of the Air (1912-1913 Boys' Friend; 1913) as by John Tregillis.

Other tales of similar interest include The Secret of the Thames (1905 Boys' Herald; 1909) as by John Tregillis; the Sam & Stephen Villiers trio comprising Britain Invaded! (1906 Boys' Friend; 1910) as by John Tregillis, Britain at Bay (1906-1907 Boys' Friend; 1910) and Britain's Revenge! (1907-1908 Boys' Friend; 1910) all as by John Tregillis; The Legions of the Kaiser (1913-1914 Boys' Friend; 1915) as by John Tregillis; and The Mailed Fist (1914 Boys' Friend; 1914) as by John Tregillis.

In The Spider Woman (1920) as by John Goodwin, a jealous woman with supernatural hypnotic powers (see She) plans a long-distance murder of the Englishman who has escaped her allure (see Women in SF). Other Goodwin titles come moderately close to the fantastic, but do not quite go there. For his apparent collaboration on the 1932 Blue Book Magazine edition of The Moon Gods (1930), see Edgar Jepson. [JC]
