(1962- ) German academic, MA and PhD in American Studies at Philipps University, Marburg, with a professional life in the US 1989-2003 and subsequently in South Korea. He began to publish genre-related articles in academic journals in the mid-1990s, first primarily on writers associated with the fantastic ranging from Kathe Koja and Michael Blumlein to Jack O'Connell and Geoff Ryman. With a shift from literature to Cinema, this interest is also reflected in Hantke's publications as editor: Horror: Creating and Marketing Fear (anth 2004), Caligari's Heirs: The German Cinema of Fear after 1945 (anth 2007), American Horror Film: The Genre at the Turn of the Millennium (anth 2010) and, with Agnieszka Soltysik-Monnet, War Gothic in Literature and Culture (anth 2016).
Since 2010, Hantke's increasing interest in sf – especially in film and Television, with articles in journals ranging from Science Fiction Studies and Extrapolation to The Journal of Popular Film and Television and The Journal of Popular Culture – is also expressed in his discussion of the cycle of post-war American sf in Monsters in the Machine: Science Fiction Film and the Militarization of America after World War II (2016). Hantke has also contributed chapters to The Oxford Handbook of Science Fiction (anth 2014) edited by Rob Latham and Through the Black Mirror – Deconstructing the Side Effects of the Digital Age (anth 2019) edited by Stuart Joy and Terence McSweeney.
