(1927-    ) US science author who specialized in astronomy, and author, contributing nonfiction pieces to the "Science Fact" department of Analog from May 1963; he began to publish fiction of genre interest with "A Twice-Toed Tale" in Analog for May 1979. His first sf novel, Gypsy Earth (1982), is a full-flung Space Opera in the manner of the pre-World War Two masters of that form, pitting valiant Terrans against vast invading spacefleets, which they initially destroy. The modernity of the tale was perhaps revealed by the destruction of Earth partway through; but survivors in the eponymous hollow Asteroids wreak revenge, and humanity survives.

Harper fell silent as an author of fiction for more than two decades after his novella "Madummudra's World" (July 1990 Analog), but in 2013 became prolific in self-publishing with the standalone urban fantasy Archie and the First National (2013) and the long sf sequence Wilderness Millennia opening with Pod 11 (2013) [see Checklist below]. These were followed by the John Sixtyacre sf series, featuring Time Travel and beginning with John Sixtyacre: Part I (2016). [JC/DRL]
