(1892/1893-? ) UK explorer and author whose nonfiction narratives, In Search of Sheba's Mines (1935) and Gold of Ethiopia (1940), describe his attempts to find the original source of the Queen of Sheba#s treasure. The narrator of his sf novel, The Garden of Eden (1940), tells the story of two immortals (see Immortality) who had visited the heart of Africa in ancient times, where they encountered a variety of species and the Garden of Eden, which is a Lost World; the immortals' motives for imparting the tale now are not entirely clear.
