Icarus

Entry updated 19 February 2024. Tagged: Publication.

US magazine of gay Speculative Fiction available in both print and downloadable formats. Published by Lethe Press, Maple Shade, New Jersey and edited by Steve Berman. Published quarterly since Summer 2009. Icarus publishes stories of speculative fiction that feature gay male protagonists though the contributors themselves need not be gay. It also includes Interviews with and essays by gay authors or about straight writers who have explored gay themes. As a result, despite the primary readership at which this magazine is apparently aimed, it explores themes and issues of much wider pertinence, especially the sense of isolation or alienation. Most stories have ventured into the realms of Fantasy rather than sf, including Vampire fiction, though "From the Bridge" (Fall 2009) by Alex Jeffers is a powerful story set in a future San Francisco (see California), and publisher Steve Berman's "Arose from Poetry" (Spring 2012) is a touching story involving a very humanoid Android. The magazine ceased with its eighteenth issue, dated Fall/Winter 2013. [MA]
