(1850-1911) Russian rabbi, poet and author, in US 1880-1910, then UK. His first collection, In the Pale: Stories and Legends of the Russian Jews (coll 1897), adheres to its titular remit; his second, The Weird Orient: Nine Mystical Tales (coll 1900), includes a Wandering Jew story, "The Doom of Al Zameri", and "The Gods in Exile" pictures the Gods of Olympus in a Lost World.
