Meynard, Yves

(1964- ) Canadian author, fluent in both English and French, who has written in French, in collaboration with Jean-Luc Trudel, as by Laurent McAllister; he began to publish work of genre interest with "Nouvelle Vague" ["New Wave"] in Imagine for March 1988, about two-thirds of his shorter work being written in French. Works in English are usually written directly in that language, not translated by the author from French originals, though some of his short stories have been so translated.
Meynard is primarily an author of fantasy. His two novels in English – The Book of Knights (1998), and Chrysanthe (2012) [for publication details see Checklist below] – are each clear, almost crystalline examinations of the relationship between personality and obligation, dramatized through the rise to proactive maturity of the young protagonists of each tale, both of them set in magicked mediaeval lands. The narrative distance from each protagonist, and the meditative intensity of the telling, tend to distinguish these tales from Young Adult modes; neither was marketed as YA.
Though some of the tales assembled in Angels & Exiles: Stories (coll 2015) are sf, and as a whole the collection ranges through the diverse tenements of Fantastika, it is as a strong writer of fantasy that Meynard remains best known. [JC]
