(1965-2023) US author, married to Yvonne Navarro, who began publishing work of genre interest with "Holy Ghost Hit Parade" in Darkness Within for January 1999. Most of his stories and novels were horror and supernatural thrillers, beginning with Scarecrow Gods (2005), which won a Bram Stoker award for best first novel; and including the SEAL Team 666 sequence opening with SEAL Team 666 (2012), about an elite government military unit that defends America from supernatural incursions. Of sf interest is Blood Ocean (2012), Ochse's first contribution to the Shared World of The Afterblight Chronicles (see The Afterblight Chronicles), set in a Ruined Earth venue, a Sargasso-Sea-like floating City west of an America decimated by plague and unrest; and the Task Force Ombra sequence comprising Grunt Life (2014), Grunt Traitor (2015) and Grunt Hero (2017), in which an Alien Invasion – prepared for by alien Fifth Agents – begins through the destruction of Earth's Power Sources, followed by first hints that the Terraforming of the planet is nigh. Much of the action takes place in a devastated Los Angeles (see California), though by the end of the third volume, with Survivalist Fiction and Military SF tropes now partially outgrown, the protagonist, now armed with strategic memories from previous versions of himself, will pose an increasing and interstellar threat to the Umi enemy.
The Sky series beginning with Burning Sky (2018) focuses initially on very Near Future Afghanistan, the intensity of its protagonists' deranging immolation in conflict being reflected through direct quotations from Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian; Or the Evening Redness in the West (1985). [JC]
