Predators

Entry updated 9 February 2017. Tagged: Film.

Film (2010). Twentieth Century Fox/Troublemaker Studios/David Entertainment. Directed by Nimród Antal. Written by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch, based on characters created by Jim and John Thomas. Cast includes Alice Braga, Adrien Brody, Lawrence Fishburne and Topher Grace. 107 minutes. Colour.

A hand-picked assortment of mercenaries and assassins are abducted and deposited on a planetary game preserve to be hunted for sport by the Predators. Producer Robert Rodriguez wrote the first draft of this in 1994; it was revived to restart the Predator franchise after the unhappy Avpr Aliens vs Predator: Requiem (2007) put an end to the crossover version. The plural title cheekily invites a reading of the film as this franchise's counterpart to Aliens (1986), though it more immediately refers to the belated revelation that the Predators themselves come in four sub-species (with an obvious eye to collectible merchandise), and to the driving conceit that their human quarry are the predators of our world. The plot closely resembles Jack Vance's The Dirdir (1969), but with the now-obligatory cast of expendables, some of whom are more fun than the leads. There is the hint of a Rodriguez-style wink at the audience in the characters' rueful analysis of their predicament as disposable objects in a cycle of bloodsport entertainment. [NL]
