(1944-2022) US professional soldier and author whose military experiences during active service in Vietnam shaped his writing career, beginning with a nonfantastic series, the Night Fighters sequence [not listed below], which is centred on US Marines in Vietnam. Of sf interest is the Military SF Starfist series beginning with First to Fight (1997) with Dan Cragg (1939-    ), which is set in Space Opera venues, including some Planetary Romance sequences on combat planets, and an increasingly prominent role for the Alien race known as Skinks, a civilization inimical to Homo sapiens whose planned Invasion of Earth grows more imminent but whom ignorant liberals back home think of as potential friends. All Starfist titles were written with Dan Cragg, who has published only with Sherman. A sequence begun by Sherman alone and concluded in collaboration with Keith R A DeCandido, the 18th Race series beginning with Issue in Doubt (2013), is generically similar.

Works outside the realm of military sf include the Demontech sequence opening with Onslaught (2002), in which an invincible army of conjured demons (see Gods and Demons) is opposed by the fantasy world's Marines; the standalone The Hunt (2008), which is a Vampire thriller; and The Chronicles of Balfrith, a projected fantasy series of which the only novel to appear was The Hand of Tyr (2017).
