US Original-Anthology series edited by George Zebrowski, published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. The first series ran for four volumes, all in paperback: Synergy: New Science Fiction Number One (anth 1987), Synergy: New Science Fiction Number Two (anth 1988), Synergy: New Science Fiction Number Three (anth 1989) and Synergy: New Science Fiction Number Four (anth 1989). It published much longer stories than most anthologies, and the emphasis was on Hard SF or pushing the boundaries of science. Fiction contributors included Gregory Benford, Paul Di Filippo, Charles L Harness, James Morrow, Chad Oliver, Frederik Pohl, Rudy Rucker, James Tiptree Jr, and Ian Watson; there were also essays on sf by Brian W Aldiss, Andrew Joron (on sf Poetry), Pamela Sargent and Ian Watson. A fifth volume, unnumbered, appeared in hardback only as Synergy SF: New Science Fiction (anth 2004), this time mixing stories with nonfiction including essays and Interviews with Ray Bradbury and Cele Goldsmith.
