Film (2009). DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures in association with Hasbro present a Di Bonaventura Pictures production. Directed by Michael Bay. Written by Ehren Kruger and Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman. Cast includes Josh Duhamel, Megan Fox, Tyrese Gibson, Shia LaBoeuf and John Turturro. 150 minutes. Colour.

Transitioning from high school to college, Sam turns out to have retained a physical fragment, and the power, of the All-Spark, making him the target of a Decepticon plan to revive the deep-sixed Megatron and harvest Earth's Sun as a Power Source under the leadership of the Ur-Decepticon known as the Fallen.

Charmless, loud, and impenetrably plotted, this sequel to Transformers (2007) encapsulated the state of the studio-led blockbuster in its postnarrative abstraction from normal forms of cinematic mimesis and meaning; the final hour is a single gigantic Mecha battle sequence at Giza (here inexplicably contiguous with Petra) fuelled by the sugar-rush kinesis of storyboarded action rather than being plotted in any Aristotelian sense. With less dialogue and character investment than its predecessor – the campus sequences are especially coarse – and the hacker third-leads pruned, it presents a more concentrated fetishization of the ages of man and his Toys, while the desert-War finale attempts to bring Military SF more fully into the present day landscape of War. The Robots are again stunningly visualized and vestigially characterized. Alan Dean Foster wrote the novelization Transformer: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) and a bridging prequel, Transformers: The Veiled Threat (2009). [NL]
