Werewolf, The

Entry updated 4 April 2017. Tagged: Film.

Film (1956). Clover Productions. Produced by Sam Katzman. Directed by Fred F Sears. Narrated by Sears. Cast includes Joyce Holden (Amy), S John Launer, George Lynn, Don Megowan, Steven Ritch and Eleanore Tanin. 79 minutes. Black and white.

Unscrupulous Scientists Dr Emery Forrest (Launer) and Dr Morgan Chambers (Lynn) have been secretly working on a serum meant to immunize humans against radiation poisoning in case the Cold War intensifies. Coming upon Duncan Marsh (Ritch) just after he has had an automobile accident, they take him back to their laboratory and inject him with the serum. Unfortunately this Drug has the side-effect of turning Marsh into a Werewolf-like creature which goes on a killing spree around the small town. Eventually, despite efforts by his wife Helen Marsh (Tanin) to save him, Marsh is shot dead by local law enforcement officials led by Sheriff Jack Haines (Megowan) – though not without slaying the two doctors first. They had decided to kill him in order to cover up their own unethical experiments.

Several Horror in SF films of the period gave an sf slant to traditionally supernatural Monsters, and this seems to have been one of the first to do so. [GSt]
