Working name of Elizabeth R Wollheim (1954- ), US editor and publisher, daughter of Donald A Wollheim; she worked as an associate editor of his DAW Books from 1975, took over the DAW presidency from him when his health began to fail in 1985, and still runs the company as President, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, the last two roles shared with Sheila E Gilbert. On taking over the company she generally continued its established traditions – though E C Tubb's Dumarest series was quickly dropped and after 1988 John Norman's Gor books ceased to appear – while acquiring and nurturing new authors. Her father had had no particular interest in hardback editions, except the occasional DAW/Science Fiction Book Club co-edition; but Betsy Wollheim has considerable enthusiasm for this format, and DAW hardbacks for the retail trade began to appear from 1985.
Wollheim is informally known both inside and outside Fandom as Betsy Wollheim and – although her formal name Elizabeth R Wollheim appears on the spines and title pages – used this byline for her introductions to the anniversary volumes Fantasy: DAW 30th Anniversary (anth 2002) and Science Fiction: DAW 30th Anniversary (anth 2002), both co-edited with Sheila E Gilbert. For her work at DAW, Wollheim has shared Chesley Awards for best art director with Sheila E Gilbert in 1990 and 1992; she has also received a solo 2012 Hugo award as best professional editor (long form) and a 2018 World Fantasy Award for life achievement.
