(1957-    ) US author of paranormal romances for the Young Adult market, including the My Sister, the Ghost sequence, the Seer sequence and the Dead Girl sequence (none of these are listed below). Franklin, Stephen

(1922-1985) Canadian journalist and author, in whose Knowledge Park (1972), the Ontario-Québec border north of Lake Abitibi houses a community of conjoined libraries in an edificial Keep known as the Igloos of Minerva which comes to contain the shared memories of human civilization. [JC]

Mahaffey, Bea

(1928-1987) Familiar name of US Magazine editor and fan Beatrice Mahaffey, who nominally coedited but was often the de facto editor of Raymond A Palmer's sf publications, in which any traces of higher quality and editorial care are generally attributed to Mahaffey. She worked on Other Worlds as managing editor May 1950 to October 1952 and as coeditor November 1952 to July 1953 and May 1955 to November 1955; she was coeditor for the full run of each of this magazine's alternate incarnations ...

Bickley, Gillian

(1943-    ) UK-born academic and poet, mostly resident in Hong Kong from 1972; she has published essays on Future War texts, and in Hong Kong Invaded! A '97 Nightmare (coll 2001) she surrounds the anonymous Future War novella, The Back Door (1897 The China Mail: 1897 chap), with an extensive explanatory apparatus; the invaders are France allied with Russia. Clute, John

(1940-    ) Canadian critic, editor and author, in the UK from 1969; married to Judith Clute from 1964, partner of Elizabeth Hand since 1996. His first professional publication was the long sf-tinged poem "Carcajou Lament" (Winter 1960 [ie Autumn 1959] Triquarterly), though he only began publishing sf reviews in 1964 and sf proper with "A Man Must Die" in New Worlds for November 1966, where much of his earlier criticism also appeared.
