Swann, Thomas Burnett

(1928-1976) US poet, author and academic who taught English literature at Florida Atlantic University, turning to full-time writing in the early 1960s. As an academic he published works on the poet HD (Hilda Doolittle [1886-1961]) and others, including Wonder and Whimsy: The Fantastic World of Christina Rossetti (1960). Gellis, Roberta L

(1927-2016) US author, author of many historical romances from 1964; her works of genre interest under her own name, either solo or in collaboration with Mercedes Lackey, have been romantic fantasies. She wrote two 1970s sf novels as by Max Daniels: The Space Guardian (1978) and Offworld (1979). A third sf venture under her own name is Overstars Mail: Imperial Challenge (2004), a Space Opera literally about crises in the mails as the Galactic Empire goes through a time of trouble. [JC]

van Dongen

Working name of American artist Henry Richard van Dongen (1920-2010), at times also credited as H R van Dongen. He received extensive artistic training at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Woodbury Ross School of Painting before going to work as an artist, initially specializing in advertising and retouching photographs. Waltermire, Beecher W

(1858-1932) US lawyer and author, father of the weird fiction author Arthur B Waltermire (1888-1938); he is of some sf interest for The Adventure of a Skeleton: A Tale of Natural Gas (1890), whose abnormally thin protagonist manages to slip down an oil well into the Hollow Earth, where he finds a fantasy-tinged world, and has adventures there. Robinson, Roger

(1943-    ) UK computer programmer, bibliographer and publisher, active in UK Fandom for many years. The Writings of Henry Kenneth Bulmer (1983 chap; rev 1984 chap) is an exhaustive Bibliography of one of the most prolific sf writers, and Who's Hugh?: An SF Reader's Guide to Pseudonyms (1987) is similarly exhaustive in its listing of Pseudonyms.
