Coxwell, Henry

(1819-1900) UK balloonist, editor and author; working under the name Henry Wells he was founder and editor of The Balloonist; Or, Aerostatic Magazine in 1845, which lasted only until 1847. His interest in piloting Balloons extended, through at least one dangerous crash, until his retirement from flying in 1885. Of some sf interest is A Knight of the Air; Or, the Aereal Rivals (1895) in which flight is achieved, not through an advanced balloon, but in a heavier-than-air machine launched by a ...

Barnes, Arthur K

(1909-1969) US pulp author, known also for his works outside the sf field, who was intermittently active in sf until about 1946, beginning with "Lord of the Lightning" for Wonder Stories in December 1931. His Gerry Carlyle series of Space Opera tales – in which Miss Carlyle and a sidekick hunt down various Aliens, carefully designated as non-sentient, for the London Interplanetary Zoo – was worked up into Interplanetary Hunter (stories June 1937-Winter 1946 Thrilling Wonder; fixup ...

(1948-2013) UK playwright and author, born Andrew James Wilson, whose sf novels Spaceache (1984) and Inside Babel (1985) comprise a short series of Satires whose targets are contemporary Politics and culture. Unfortunately, his use of sf instruments is significantly less competent than can be found in some more conventional Mainstream Writers of SF; his attempt to make surrealist fun of Space Opera in Spaceache founders on his manifest ignorance of its well-understood Clichés, its ...

Memory Edit

Term used in this encyclopedia for selective Amnesia and/or implantation of false memories, deliberately inflicted upon its victim – though sometimes self-inflicted. Early Proto SF examples include Dr Heidenhoff's Process (1880) by Edward Bellamy and "The Memory Clearing House" (July 1892 Idler) by Israel Zangwill (1864-1926) – the latter featuring both removal of one's own memories and "borrowing" of memories recorded from others via a quasi-scientific Invention: "the noemagraph, ...

Clute, John

(1940-    ) Canadian critic, editor and author, in the UK from 1969; married to Judith Clute from 1964, partner of Elizabeth Hand since 1996. His first professional publication was the long sf-tinged poem "Carcajou Lament" (Winter 1960 [ie Autumn 1959] Triquarterly), though he only began publishing sf reviews in 1964 and sf proper with "A Man Must Die" in New Worlds for November 1966, where much of his earlier criticism also appeared. This criticism, despite some studiously ...
