Leprince de Beaumont, Madame Jeanne-Marie

Tagged: Author.

(1711-1780) French writer whose version of Beauty and the Beast has become the standard text. Born and raised in France, JMLDB settled in England in 1746 after an unhappy marriage. England remained her home until 1762; she retired to Switzerland in 1768, continuing to write. Her voluminous production included work for both children and adults. Almost all of her Fairytales are in Le Magasin des Enfants (coll 1756 UK; trans The Young Misses Magazine 1757). The most immediately successful was "La Belle et la Bête", which JMLDB had adapted from a much longer, more intricate story of the same title by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Gallon de Villeneuve (1695-1755) in Les contes marins ou la jeune Américaine (coll 1740). JMLDB's version emphasizes the moral triumph of love and virtue over beauty and riches. [MA]
