(1953-    ) Award-winning US fantasy and sf painter and illustrator whose work is distinctive for its strong draughtsmanship and rich colour. His compositions are bold and simple, usually featuring a single figure or small group in an ornate, atmospheric setting, often with a touch of sly humour.

Maitz's first published work was a b/w advertisement (1975) in Marvel Comics's Kull and the Barbarians magazine. He painted some unusual covers for Warren Publishing's Horror magazines, and created Captain Morgan for the Seagram's Rum advertising campaign, but the main bulk of his work has been for fantasy book covers. Some of his best-known work was for the original editions of Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun (1980-1983). In 1980 he was awarded both the Silver Medal of the American Society of Illustrators and the World Fantasy Award, and he won the Hugo Award as Best Professional Artist in 1990 and 1993. Collections are First Maitz: Selected Works of Don Maitz (graph 1988) and Dreamquests: The Art of Don Maitz (graph 1993). [RT]
