Rosencreutz, Christian

Tagged: Author.

Supposedly a German writer (1378-1484) whose works inspired – or who was himself directly responsible for – the founding of Rosicrucianism. Rosencreutz is credited with the authorship of at least part of the Fama Fraternitas dess Loblichen Ordens des Rosenkreutzes (1614 chap), known in English as The Fame of the Fraternity of the Meritorious Order of the Rosy Cross, and of the Confessio Fraternitas (1615), two of the texts generally thought to have spurred the founding of the movement. The former describes Rosencreutz's voyages to the Orient – the appropriate direction to take for a Magus seeking initiation and access to the secret history of the world (see Fantasies of History). Rosencreutz's life is described, in terms indistinguishable from Romance, in Johann Valentin Andreae's Chymische Hochzeit (1616), known in English under various titles but usually as The Chemical Wedding of Christian Rosencreutz. The surname is also frequently spelt Rosenkreutz. [JC]
