Pseudonym of UK writer David Storr Unwin (1918-2010), who wrote some adult work as David Unwin but has as Severn concentrated on stories for children and YA readers, beginning with Rick Afire! (1942). Relatively little of his work is fantasy. Dream Gold (1949) tells of two boys whose identical Dreams lead them to Islands in the Pacific where they encounter Pirates; Drumbeats! (1953) is a Timeslip tale set in Africa; The Future Took Us (1957) is sf; The Girl in the Grove (1974) is a Ghost Story in which a young girl ghost creates a love triangle with two contemporary adolescents; in The Wishing Bone (1977) a Toy, grown to lifesize, forces captured children to make one Wish each, a task dauntingly difficult to accomplish without disaster.
