Shepard, E H

Tagged: Artist.

(1879-1976) Prolific UK book illustrator with a fine pen-line style, most famous for his Illustrations for A A Milne's Winnie the Pooh books. His drawings had great charm: they were strongly conceived but had the informal look of sketches, and during a long and successful working life he illustrated a great number of classics of English literature. Contemporary authors whom he illustrated, aside from Milne, included Kenneth Grahame, Frances Hodgson Burnett and E V Lucas (1868-1938). His greatest talent was for depicting humanized animals, as in Milne's Winnie the Pooh (1926) and Grahame's The Wind in the Willows (1931 edn).

Shepard studied at Heatherley's School of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools, and began work as a cartoonist for Punch. He became one of the best-loved children's illustrators of his day. [RT]
