(1935-    ) US writer, author of more than 1000 stories since his first, "Gorgon Planet" for Nebula Science Fiction in 1954, and of an unknown number of novels (many under unrevealed pseudonyms in various genres) since Revolt on Alpha C (1955). He is central to the history of sf, especially for the stories and novels published 1967-1976 (see SFE), but is not a comparatively significant author of fantasy. The Majipoor sequence – Lord Valentine's Castle (1980), The Desert of Stolen Dreams (1981), Majipoor Chronicles (coll of linked stories 1982) and Valentine Pontifex (1983) – features extravagant (but coolly told) adventures in a Planetary-Romance venue. Gilgamesh the King (1984) is a Twice-Told rendering of Gilgamesh; the same character appears in "Gilgamesh in the Outback" (1986), which won a 1987 Hugo Award and which is incorporated into To the Land of the Living (fixup 1989), an Afterlife fantasy in which the dead are reborn into an Earth-like venue from which, after recycling their lives interminably, they tend to wish to escape; the rest of the fixup is spun off from the Heroes in Hell Shared World. The book sees Gilgamesh break through a Portal into present-day New York. [JC]
