Brunt, Captain Samuel

Pseudonym of the unidentified author (?   -    ) of A Voyage to Cacklogallinia; with a Description of the Religion, Policy, Customs and Manners of that Country (1727); the facsimile edition of this rare text (1940), with an introduction by Marjorie Nicolson, is useful; the novel itself, best understood as a Satire on British politics, commerce and culture, takes Captain Brunt first to an unknown Caribbean Island inhabited by immense talking fowl – making this a Beast Fable [see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below] – and then to the Moon, which turns out to be a Posthumous Fantasy [see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below] venue in which the spirits of humans for Earth await further passage god-wards. The satire throughout is sharp but statically expressed. [JC]
