Bryning, Frank

(1907-1999) Australian author who began publishing work of genre interest with "Miracle in the Moluccas" as by Frank Cornish for Pocket Book Weekly in 1950; his employment as a senior editor for various journals hampered his writing career, which effectively ended in the 1950s, though he published some stories late in life, after his retirement in 1973. Two series – the Joan Buckley tales about a Telepath and the Vivienne Gale or Commonwealth Satellite Space Station tales about a woman doctor in space (see Medicine) – were restricted to magazine publication in 1954-1955 for the first, 1952-1956 for the second. Bryning lacked a certain flamboyance, but his work was noted for its scientific realism. Journey Into Orbit (1980) was an sf tale for children. [JC]
