Colfer, Eoin

(1965-    ) Irish schoolteacher and author for Young Adult audiences from his first book, Benny and Omar (1998), which is not fantastic. His other singletons are, however of fantasy interest: the young protagonist of The Wish List (2000), who has died, is given a chance to redeem her soul by doing good works back on Earth; The Supernaturalist (2004) is set in the Near Future but is essentially fantasy. Of particular interest is ... And Another Thing ...: Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Part Six of Three (2009), a Sequel by Other Hands to Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which did not equal the series, but did not embarrass the author or his readers.

Colfer is of course best known for his extremely successful Artemis Fowl sequence – beginning with Artemis Fowl (2001) – featuring the Technofantasy adventures of the amusingly ruthless young Artemis, whose exploits in a Technology-irradiated world would prove disastrous or fatal if it were not for his connection with Faerie, whose lands extend Underground and Under the Sea, including Atlantis. More recently Colfer started the W.A.R.P. series of young adult Time-Travel adventures with The Reluctant Assassin (2013). The acronym stands for Witness Anonymous Relocation Program, and deals with the hiding of witnesses in different historical settings. [JC]
