Russian animated film (1978; original title Kontakt). Soyuzmultfilm. Directed by Vladimir Tarasov. Written by Alexander Kostinsky. 10 minutes. Colour.
An artist wandering the countryside rests by a lake: as he hums to himself, a Spaceship arrives. Its pilot – a Shapeshifting fluorescent triangle-eyed slug-like Alien – attempts First Contact, but the artist is terrified and flees. The alien pursues, eventually winning the artist's trust by loosely mimicking his appearance and repeating the tune they'd heard him humming: the love theme from The Godfather (1972). The pair walk off happily together, singing.
This is a fairly slight story, though with a optimistic message regarding brotherhood across the stars and putting oneself in another's shoes. The artist's panic is played for laughs (see Humour), but is not particularly funny. However, the rendering of the alien's perspective in geometric imagery is interesting, whilst the animation – as is to be expected from Tarasov – is good. [SP]
