(1958- ) US academic, playwright and author who began to publish work of genre interest with "Love Is All You Need" in Forbidden Lines for October/November 1990. Much of his substantial output of short fiction has been fantasy, with an inclination to jostle the boundaries of traditional genres (see Fantastika); his Anthology, Crossroads: Tales of the Southern Literary Fantastic (anth 2004) with Andy Duncan, is a rich sampler of the kind of fiction both editors prefer and themselves compose. Some of Cox's best work has been assembled as The End of All Our Exploring (coll 2018), which contains a range of tales running from regional fantasies of the south to Near Future Military SF. His darker work has some of the harrowed urbanity of such an author as Shirley Jackson. Roger Zelazny (2021) (see Roger Zelazny), a nonfiction study, is thorough and competent, and argues for the high quality of some of his later work. [JC]
