(1952- ) US playwright, actor and author whose Near-Future sf novel, Body Mortgage (1989), tells in a Cyberpunk idiom the tale of a Chicago private eye on the track of a body-parts scam – in this world, one's own body can serve as collateral for a mortgage – in the immediate run-up to the millennium. Engling's obvious competence would show more clearly, perhaps, in a more fully original setting. One of his plays, "Ghost Work" (performed 1987), is of supernatural interest for its depiction of a dead couple caught in a kind of huis clos tape-loop or Time Loop, where they are forced to re-enact their stupid, violent deaths.
