Fantastic Worlds

1. US Amateur Magazine which saw eight issues from Summer 1952 to Fall 1955, published and edited by Edward W Ludwig for the first two issues and then taken over by Sam Sackett. It ran mostly fan-written articles but included some short fiction and other essays of interest such as "The Arkham House Story" (Summer 1952) by August Derleth, "Lovers and Otherwise" (Spring 1953) by Philip José Farmer and one of the earliest pieces by Robert Silverberg, "Some Words About Fantastic" (Fall/Winter 1952), which yielded a response from Howard Browne. Amongst its fiction is an early story by David R Bunch, "Through Crisis with the Gonedaidins" (Summer 1953), plus material by A Bertram Chandler, David H Keller, Wilson Tucker and an early vignette by Tom Reamy. 2. US Semiprozine published by Scott A Becker of Missoula, Montana. An advance issue, numbered #0, appeared undated in November 1995, quarto-size with four stories, four poems and a vignette, but the first true issue did not appear until March 1996, despite plans for bimonthly publication. It contained some strong material, not least an extract, "Spraying for Bugs", from the then unpublished novel The Troika (1997) by Stepan Chapman, accompanied by a laudatory piece by Jeff VanderMeer, who eventually published the novel. There were other forms of experimental writing, notably t winter-damon's Slipstream "Do Deadheads Dream of Shock-Pulsed Meat ...?" and Mark Rich's mystical "Secret Spring". The whole issue showed promise but finances were insufficient and no more issues appeared. [MA]
