1. US Digest-size magazine. Two issues, May and November 1950, published by Magabook, edited by Curtis Mitchell. "Old and New Fantasy Stories but Always the Best" was the slogan of this short-lived magazine, whose stories were largely reprinted from general Pulps of the 1930s and early 1940s. It also offered prizes for reports of true fantastic experiences and haunted houses. #2 was retitled Fantasy Stories, carried a lengthy UFO feature ("Flying Saucer Secrets Blabbed by Mad Pilot", as the cover put it), and was three months late. #3 never materialized. 2. US Digest-size magazine; four issues, February, June, August, November 1953. The first issue was called Fantasy Magazine but thereafter it was entitled Fantasy Fiction although, perhaps to avoid confusion with (1) above it is generally remembered as Fantasy Magazine. Published by Future Publications, New York, edited by Lester del Rey, under his own name for #1-#3 and under the Pseudonym Cameron Hall for #4 (November 1953). All issues had covers by Hannes Bok. The first issue featured a Conan novelette revised by L Sprague de Camp from Robert E Howard's unpublished "The Black Stranger"; other contributors were Poul Anderson, Lester del Rey and Robert Sheckley (twice, once as by Finn O'Donnevan). The contents, of quite good quality, were almost exclusively fantasy, much of it rather in the style of Unknown. [MJE/MA]
