(1929-2020) US graphic designer and typeface designer who co-founded Push Pin Studios in 1954 and set up his own design company Milton Glaser Inc in 1974. His work includes more than 400 posters, New York's iconic logo I ♥ NY (1977) and the "bullet" logo used by DC Comics from 1977 to 2005. Glaser's often deceptively simple but always striking book cover designs appeared on a number of titles of genre interest, including Clifton Fadiman's Fantasia Mathematica (anth 1958) and The Mathematical Magpie (anth 1962), Walter M Miller Jr's A Canticle for Leibowitz (fixup dated 1960 but 1959), Kingsley Amis's New Maps of Hell: A Survey of Science Fiction (1960), Donald Barthelme's Come Back, Dr Caligari (1964), Kate Wilhelm's Let the Fire Fall (1969), Philip José Farmer's Tarzan Alive: A Definitive Biography of Lord Greystoke (1972), the first US edition of Stanisław Lem's A Perfect Vacuum (1978), and Philip Roth's The Plot Against America (2004).
In 2009 Glaser received the US National Medal of Arts, the first graphic designer to be so honoured. He described his creative process, with many examples, in the posthumously published Sketch and Finish: The Journey from Here to There (graph 2020). [DRL]
