Hogan, Robert J
(1897-1963) US author, mostly of adventure tales for American Pulp magazines, who is of sf interest mainly for the G-8 and his Battle Aces sequence, all 115 novel-length instalments seemingly written by him. They comprised the essential contents of the 115 issues of G-8 and His Battle Aces (1933-1944); many individual issues have been reproduced in facsimile form in the twenty-first century and sold as books (they are not listed here); earlier, a selection of Hogan's tales were published in book form, beginning with G-8 and His Battle Aces 1!: The Bat Staffel (October 1933 G-8 and His Battle Aces; 1969). G-8 is a fighter pilot whose skills (and costume) make him into one of the many genuine proto-Superhero figures preceding the creation of Superman for the comics in 1938; and his enemies in the air – super planes, Vampires, the supernaturally wicked Mad Scientist Bat Staffel, and so forth – are similar proto-Supervillains.
Most of Hogan's other work is of less direct interest, but his four lead novels for the short-lived pulp magazine The Secret 6 include outright sf elements; these are collected as The Secret 6: The Complete Adventures (omni 2009).
