(1982- ) German-born, UK-based artist, filmmaker, musician and Videogame designer, of Malaysian Chinese heritage. His game designs, video works and installations have been mostly set in his "Sinofuturist" universe, a world shaped and then largely abandoned by sentient AI. Lek's engagement with this future extends to innovative blurring between different media and platforms; as an example, NOX (2023-2025) includes a gallery installation, interactive game play and live music performance, as a self-driving car attempts to avoid the reprogramming given to non-compliant machines. AI consciousness and disobedience is a theme of many of the Sinofuturist works. The video Europa, Mon Amour (2016) depicts a Dystopian post-Brexit Britain. The Bonus Levels (2014-current) video and gaming series explores the construction of potential Utopias, a theme repeated in the Nepenthe Valley series of NFTs (2022-current). [CWa]
