(1987- ) US oceanographer and author much of whose work, most of it definable as fantasy or horror, directly and powerfully reflects her family background as a member of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas. She began to publish work of genre interest with "First Ride of the Day" in Vignettes from the End of the World (anth 2014) edited by Jacob Haddon. Her first novel, the Young Adult Elatsoe [pronounced el-at-so-ay] (2020), which won the Locus Award for best first novel, hovers Equipoisally between fantasy and mythopoeic sf, with hints of some assonances between the Lipan Apache gods here present and the kind of Time Abyss that shapes the Cthulhu Mythos; the urban scenes have a Cyberpunk ambience. A Snake Falls to Earth (2021), which again draws on the Lipan Apache Mythology to different effect, won the Andre Norton Nebula award for best Young Adult/middle grade novel. [JC]
