(1956- ) US electrical engineer, technical journalist and author who began to publish work of genre interest with "An Unfiltered Man" for Aboriginal in September/October 1987, publishing his short fiction almost exclusively with that magazine until it ceased publication in 2001. As a Hard SF writer who has stated he has "the temperament of an engineer", he tends to write stories in which problems are solvable, often within a Thought Experiment frame. His first novel, Quad World: A Novel of the Future (1991), drifts enjoyably from this default, as its protagonist – finding himself in a Parallel World where the survivors of a deadly War, many of them apparent avatars out of the legends of Earth, are sequestered into 200 Game-World-like quads – must gain godly powers fast. In his second novel, Picoverse (2002), a Pocket Universe (see Great and Small) is generated in error by a miniaturized electron accelerator; within this universe, once again, iconic figures (see Recursive SF) vie. CUSP (2005) features an AI capable, it seems, of wishing to run an earth transformed by a macro-engineered creation of world-encircling rings which constitute a new Power Source. [JC]
