Morrall, Clare

(1952-    ) UK author whose earlier work, like her first novel, the nonfantastic Astonishing Splashes of Colour (2004), tend to feature characters immersed in edgily dysfunctional lives, with some sense that the pressure of the world may cause them to burst beyond the mundane into situations of psychic extremity. Her first novel of sf interest, When the Floods Came (2015), places its Young Adult protagonist into a Near Future world itself under near intolerable stress, for it has been savagely depopulated by a mystery virus Pandemic. At novel's end, she and her family seem to be rescued, but perhaps to become refugee migrants elsewhere. [JC]
